Rampant Consumerism.

I’m thinking of buying a Motorola L2 and a Canon SD600 … anyone have any better suggestions for a cell phone and a camera?  Buddy has the Sony 800i or 810i or something phone-that-does-everything and while it has ok res, the pictures need to be taken really close or they blur out pretty badly so it seems the camera ought be external.

Also why does Telus have to be better than everyone but not support GSM?  Maybe I should just keep my shite CDMA phone.

The Underhanded C Contest

We hereby announce our second annual contest to write innocent-looking C code implementing malicious behavior. In many ways this is the exact opposite of the Obfuscated C Code Contest: in this contest you must write code that is as readable, clear, innocent and straightforward as possible, and yet it must fail to perform at its apparent function. To be more specific, it should do something subtly evil.

Free USB Key

Just a heads up here: Microsoft is sending out free USB keys as part of some weird Windows-licensing-awareness campaign. If you’ve got an MSN/hotmail account, you just have to fill in your address and they’ll mail one to you. Check it out.

Much better than carrying around a bag full of floppies. Be warned though — it says MICROSOFT on it in big white letters. If you feel shame carrying around “Microsoft”-branded pariphenalia, then maybe you should pass on this particular scam.

The Present State of Internet Hosting: A report.

I gad a cobe.

*sniffle*

And so I decided in my convalescence to find the best web host. Specifically, the best dedicated / vps provider. I’m in the market for that sort of thing.

Conclusion: Linode is the best entry level thing. But! You want to be careful with these VPS dealies, they break if you put a ridiculous load on them, like a really heavily used blogy thing + wiki + stuff. And the host they recommend, Dreamhost is some sort of ultimate thing where for $1200US/yr you get a shiny rackmount with 4TB/month. Yum. This makes it a favourite of not only these people I Googled up, but anime fansubbers and the like. Probably real companies too and not just people with burgeoning web-hobbies and too much time to waste cross-comparing hosts. I looked at a dozen or so, highlights are Rimuhosting being one of the niftier but pricier and TekTonic being confirmed as sketchy with Wholesale Internet and ColoPronto leaving me wonder how they can be so very affordable.

Transmetropolitan

My procrastinatory delight of the moment, previously House, is a comic. Called Transmetropolitan it makes its points and sharpens its humour by painting a future dystopia with the sort of hyperbolic violence and cynicism guaranteed to endear it to you lot.

The End of the World

“The most natural assumption about what lies ahead is that the future will be just like today, only more so, an assumption which usually turns out to be completely wrong. “

Some Days I Envy the Devious

I’m not sure I could still be my friendly honest self and be quite this manipulative, but wow, some days wouldn’t it be nice to be as intuitively powerful at working people as this guy seems to be?

Also, wow, that sheep comic is a new favourite of mine and it completely doesn’t work at making me sleep any more. But stuff lately has managed to throw my not-quite-fixed-but-maybe-getting-better sleeping hours firmly back into a tail spin. However, I did like them enough that I looked into buying the CD (though I have it in mp3) and it has a nifty cover. Blah, 5am, ‘night.

Team America: World Police

This is hilarious. Beyond the obvious, they also do a good job of satirizing cheesy action movies in general with cliches up to the required implausible sequel hook. They also make good use of the er, flexibility, of the puppet genre. Plus they piss off a bunch of actors by using their names and faces sans permission, including burning an effigy of Tim Robbins. Oh, and an exploding Micheal Moore.

I searched around to post some quotes because I suck at remembering things verbatim. But, fortunately/unfortunately it appears it’s actually not out, I guess this was a screener or something because it’s released oct 15th. Pish, well, I’ll try an example to give you an idea:

*terrorist running into the Louvre*
“Don’t worry, I’ve got ‘em!” … missile fires from jet, destroys museum.
“People of France, you can relax, we got the terrorist, everything is bon!”
*horrified faces*

Oh, and Kim Jong Il kicks ass as the stereotypical Dr. Evil style villian.

In the words of their theme song that plays while they blow things up “Team America / Fuck yeah!”

KMFDM

KMFDM is doing their first tour of Canada, “this’ll be KMFDM’s first time in canada since 1997. and even before that we never played anywhere but toronto, and if i remember correctly vancouver once or twice and montreal once.”

It happens they’ll be in Regina before headed out here. Never thought that’d happen. Figures that I’d have moved before it did though. Ah well, they’ll be nearby also, hell I could see the show twice if I really wanted. But you guys get it first.
