Cancelled Show Driving CBS Nuts
Posted by plurk in Uncategorized on May 23rd, 2007
So what happens when you cancel a show a lot of people like? They spend $5-$10 US to send you Nuts … in bulk. In the three days it’s been in operation, NutsOnline — the company who started the campaign by offering discounted peanuts for the cause — has collected over $10k US and sent 7522lbs (3.4 metric tonnes) of peanuts (as of the posting date) to CBS headquarters in NY and LA. As a compromise, CBS has offered closure. Closure? Perhaps reasonable, but Nuts to you CBS. We want a whole season. I mean, how could they possibly think something like “Dracula PI” could do better for the network than Jericho. If nothing else, they have proof that there are viewers. I’ll be giving my $10 on the morrow.
Don’t go to the movies
Posted by plurk in Uncategorized on May 9th, 2007
The MPAA’s claims that Canada is the hotbed of piracy has resulted in the end of advance movie screenings in our country. While this doesn’t affect me directly, it does piss me off. At least Warner Bros (and possibly some more studios to come) have decided that the only reason we go to their theaters is to pirate movies. I mean, what other reason is there to pay more than Argentina’s national debt to get a popcorn and a pop. And to sit through twenty minutes of coke and vehicle and CapitalOne ads, along with the oh so wonderful anti-piracy boo-hoo self pity bullshit all while paying more than the movie will cost in two years when it is at the bottom of the cheap DVD bargain bin. And now they tell me I could have avoided all this by just downloading it off the internet … are you kidding me? Why’d nobody tell me this earlier? I mean, I love watching shaky, grainy, crappy video recordings of big screen movies. I didn’t know someone else provided them and I didn’t have to make my own copies! </sarcasm> Seriously, how stupid are the MPAA and their related studios? Doing shit like this doesn’t get them sympathy or stop the problem, it pisses people off. In fact, it might make things worse. How, I could save about $30 a week by avoiding their movies all together in the theater … I could download them instead just to tell them how I really feel about their protectionist bullshit … and you know what, I just might. It was going to be a boring summer anyway.
Psychic not so psychic …
Posted by plurk in Uncategorized on May 9th, 2007
Uri Geller, a famed “Psychic” from the 70s, used the DMCA to have YouTube remove a clip from their site he claimed violated his copyright. The problem? He doesn’t own the copyright on the clip. The video was debunking a lot of Uri’s claims, featuring clips from various news programs and from his appearance on the Tonight Show (where the host of the video had advised Mr. Carson on how to ensure what the audience was seeing was real). In the entire 14 minute video, there is only a 3 second clip which Uri Geller has claim upon (and that is allowed under US fair-use laws). So the video was removed and then put back … no harm right? Well, it turns out it is illegal to issue a DMCA take-down request on material you don’t own … and the EFF has decided that Uri Geller would be a perfect warning for future violators and have decided to sue him on the behalf of the copyright owner.
Why Uri Geller … this likely has a lot to do with it: “He calls himself a psychic and has sued several people for millions of dollars for saying otherwise. His psychic powers were not sufficient to reveal to him, however, that he would lose all the lawsuits against his critics.” [The Skeptic's Dictionary]. In my opinion, this couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

The Mafia 2.0

Is the MPAA making up priacy numbers? If not, Canada and New York account for 90% of the world’s movie piracy. I think that is something to be proud of. We’re doing much better than China! We’re #1 … we’re #1 … we’re #1 …
Improving Photos with Famous Art

Photoshop CS has brought an interesting set of new features. One of them I really want to play with … it is called colour matching. This article describes how to use famous artwork to improve one’s photos. The most impressive examples is below the HDR ones. It is breathtaking … probably looks better than original.
