Mac OS X Intel

Apparently the developer systems for Mac OS X 10.4.2 “Tiger” for Intel are out. Apparently the version of OSX distributed with the developer platform won’t work on any system other than the one its designed for. It will apparently install, but when it boots up, it claims that “Darwin X86 does not support the hardware.” Now, the error is interesting. Darwin x86 doesn’t support the hardware huh … this is darwin isn’t it? They opensourced the actual OS, it’s just the GUI (Aqua) which isn’t, so in theory, installing OSX 10.4.2 and then overwritting some (or all) files w/ ones from Darwin x86 6.0.2 would get you around the problem … right? I mean, Aqua isn’t integrated with Darwin, they are distinctly seperate. Darwin activates Aqua. So if the error is really that Darwin x86 won’t work on the hardware, then in theory the problem is with Darwin, not Aqua. :>
Lawsuit over ‘Dirty’ Photos

It appears that the University isn’t the only place that gets touchy about photos. A police officer, who got his cruiser stuck in the mud, became a little enraged when a citizen, John Bell, took pictures of him stuck in mud. So the officer radioed another office to pull Bell over. Then he came to where Bell was pulled over, threatened him, and confiscated the memory card. When Bell recovered the card the next day, the images of the incident had been erased.
Mad Cows South of the 49th

According to CBC, the United States has confirmed its second case of Mad Cow Disease (BSE). “A representative from the British lab that tested the cow said there is ‘no evidence that this was an imported animal.’” Boy, it’s a good thing that the Americans kept out all that pesky Canadian beef, eh?

Canadian Politics Are Fun

“It all started with a whisper in Paul Martin’s ear…. the night ended with Paul Martin jumping on a desk in the Commons lobby and leading a Liberal hurrah for Valeri and his staff.” This well-written CanOE article describes the minority Liberal government’s clever trick to get through a $4.6B budget amendment, while avoiding the Conservatives’ threat to topple them. To be honest, I’m rather impressed.
Holy Sh*t! They’re REAL!

I just saw the cover for June’s Edition of PC Gamer. The feature?! PREY! I shit you not. Prey! Not only that, but they also discussed Duke Nukem Forever. I almost threw down the money for PC Gamer for the first time in … umm … a long time. I just trashed some old PC Gamer mags from like 98 (IIRC). One of which focuses on the E3 show of that year and Duke Nukem Forever! I honestly never thought they’d see the light of day. Duke was supposed to be built on Prey’s engine, but when Prey was scrapped in the late 90’s … duke switched engines … then it switched again … and again … and again … BUT PREY IS REAL! And it’s getting rave reviews … and the video is amazing.
A Computer Program Called Internet

In my wandering today, I ran across a CBC Prime Time News clip from October 8th, 1993. The journalist is Bill Cameron, who passed away two months ago from Cancer. It is interesting as the clips on “this is how an airport works” are interesting. It is so strange that an every day thing was ever new. Still, I’d like to return to a time when the Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory wasn’t true.
“… there is an interesting kind of restraint … that you find … I mean there is not a lot of cursing or swearing . There is not a lot of personal … umm … cuts. There is not a lot of … ummm … put downs that one would expect to find. There are not screen fulls of … ‘Go To Hell’ … ummm … which is suprising. So the kind of liberation is … is … is … is mixed. It is interesting because one would think if you were annonymous, you’d do anything you want. But people have … in a group have their own sense of community and what we can do. The thing th… though that I’m always left with, when I leave, is this overwhelming desire for people to be rooted. And the only way they feel rooted is through another person. And if this is the way … the only way maybe, that they can talk to somebody, this is how they’ll do it.”
— John Allen
I broke out laughing at the line “I’m always left with, when I leave, is this overwhelming desire for people to be rooted.” ;> For those of you who don’t know what being ‘rooted’ is, it’s when a cracker seizes root/administrator access to a computer.
