Fun Games with Telemarketers

I know some of you have taken a few days/weeks out of your normal lives and played telemarketer. It stressed you out, but you taught me the best way to deal with a telemarketer. If you don’t want what they are selling, just keep the me on the phone and refused to hang up. While I’ll get to the point of this in a second, I should fill you in on my opinions about MBNA. The short of it is I have a personal axe to grind with this company. Just after I graduated from university and got my moderately good paying job (at least better than when I was a student anyway) and my whole income coming in thing, I tried to get a credit card. Since I had managed to get through university without needing student loans or a credit card, my credit history was non-existent. This proved rather difficult to acquire a credit card. One of the first one I tried for was one of the pre-approved MBNA ones. Since they turned me down because I didn’t have any credit history (sort of telling me they always claim you’re “pre-approved” even when you aren’t), I decided never to do business with them in the future (lying cocksuckers). When their letter show up, the tear them up and recycle them. I have, though, considered having them sent back as unsolicited mail. Which might be fun.

Coming Next Fall …

I’m not sure if anyone has noticed the list of new TV shows hitting the markets this fall, but I’d like to highlight a few for you:

How I Met Your Mother: This is a romantic comedy coming to ABC in the fall. The only thing of note really is that the cast list includes Neil Patrick Harris & Allison Hannigan. That alone has caused it to be added to my list of shows to check out.

Ghost Whisperer: This show stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and by the sounds of things is very much in line with Tru Calling. It airs this fall on CBS.

Theshold: Okay, now this one is cool. Let me first start with two people staring in it: Carla Gugino, and Brent Spiner. For those of you who are not sure who Carla Gugino, I could mention Karen Sisco, but you’ll likely remember her better as Marv’s lesbian parole officer Lucille in Sin City. And if you don’t know who Brent Spiner is … hang your head in shame. David Goyer (of Blade I/II/III fame) is also associated with this show, but I’m not sure how heavily. In any case, back to the show. Sci-Fi, of course. A space craft has set down in the middle of the ocean (which ocean? no idea) in modern day(?). Anyway, Gugino is a first-contact contingency specialist and heads up a team which is to make first-contact with the ship. This show airs on Fri. Sept 2nd, at 9pm EST on CBS.

The Unit: I’m not overly sure exactly what this show is about, but it is created by the same guy who did The Shield, and it stars Amy Acker (Angel for those of you not following at home) and Robert Patrick (T2, X-Files). I’m willing to give it a chance.

Invasion: I don’t recognize anyone who is in this series, but it appears to be sort of along the same lines as Arrival. Basically aliens start invading a small Florida town during a storm. Anywho, a trailer for it exists here (when did TV shows get trailers?! … not that it’s much of a trailer … ). Anywho, it sounds like the basic “They Are Among Us” sci-fi plot. Still, I’ll check it out. ABC, this fall.

Night Stalker: Okay, I must admit this one got me with it’s name. Basically this is a remake of the 1970’s series Kolchak: The Night Stalker. Sounds good to me. ABC This fall.

Prison Break: Now this is one of the coolest ones coming out in my opinion. A structural engineer’s brother was, in his opinion, wrongfully convicted of murder and is currently sitting on death row. Now he’ll do anything to get his brother out of his prison … Having studied the structural plans to the prison (in one of the ads it sounded like he designed the prison, but it appears not to be the case in the TV Tome entry), he plans to break his brother out. The catch? He has to get into the prison to get his brother out. What ensues next would make the Stainless Steel Rat proud. In any case, it’s very unique premise … The catch? It’s on Fox.

Four Kings: Now this show is about four single guys living in New York. Nothing overly special, but it includes Seth Green in it’s cast list so it’s worth checking out.

Fathom: Okay, one of the things that attracted my attention to this one was the description that it’s similar to Cameron’s Abyss (cool movie IMO). In addition to that, the $7 million price tag for the pilot (the highest of the fall) means it should have some decent special effects … and maybe actors too. As with some of the others, this is a check out one on my list. Apparently it will air just before Las Vegas on NBC on Monday nights this fall.

Show Me Your Papers!

"Those who would give up essential liberty for temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
― Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

A couple days ago, I read about how the UK was planning on implementing their own National Identification Cards, perhaps following the lead of the United States, perhaps pursuing ID cards for their own reasons. The two reasons presented to justify the need for National Identification cards was to stop terrorists and to prevent fraud. What a load of crap. The only way that would be true would be if all terrorists (even those who never committed a crime) were identified by some future seeing machine and biometrics weren’t utter crap. A well trained person or a sophisticated terrorist network would have no problem forging or stealing National ID cards. Don’t believe me, google “biometrics” and “Fraunhofer Research Institute of Germany.” The found a way around every biometrics scanner out there.

The Vegetable Strikes Back

In a movie spoof from The Organic Trade Association (OTA) and Free Range Studios (”The Meatrix“), vegetables and other organic foods star as famous “Star Wars” saga characters in a short film promoting healthier eating without pollution and pesticides.

Learn the ways of the farm with the help of Ham Solo, Chewbroccoli, C3Peanuts, Tofu D2, Obi Wan Cannoli (who explains that “the Farm is a kind of a field, that creates all edible things… it sustains us and nurtures us, it binds us all together.”), Cuke Skywalker, Darth Tater (”now more chemical than vegetable, twisted and evil…”) and Princess Lettuce. Watch for the assault on the Death Melon and a kick-ass Mos Eisley cantina scene at the salad bar.

I’m Poisonous …

via Houston Chronicles:

A man in Taiwan has died and four others were poisoned after drinking a popular bottled fizzy drink laced with cyanide and labelled “I am poisonous. Please do not drink.” … Police suspect someone laced the drink with cyanide before placing it on store shelves …

Okay, there are some really crazy people in this world. Why would anyone randomly lace drinks with cyanide? And then, why would you label it “I’m poisonous. Please do not drink.”? I mean, who would believe that? There are some sick people in the world. Mind, had I found a coke bottle with that label, I’d have asked the clerk exactly what the hell was up … and hope he/she knew.
