Suicide is Responsible

Talentless hate-cartoonist Ted Rall characterizes Hitler’s suicide as responsible, implying that Bush is irresponsible for not following suit.

Tempus Fugit

While I’d usually state that suicide is a coward’s way out, I’d be lying if the thought of Bush offing himself didn’t appeal to me. It’s not that I have anything personally against Bush its just I don’t like how he conducts business (no matter how successful he’s been at it). No, the real reason I’d like to see Bush gone is purely selfish. There is a lot of bad blood between the current US administration and the current Canadian government. As long as Bush is in power, relations between Canada and the US are going to get worse — though not as worse as they would have become had Kerry and his protectionists gained power. From the Canadian point of view the last US election was summed up by the tag line of the movie Aliens vs. Predator: “Who ever wins, we lose.”

So yeah, did you hear about the phone call between Martin and Bush on Friday? They “agreed to disagree on missile defence”. When did the Dithering Man grow balls?!? It’s a question I’ve had since I first heard we were opting out of Missile Defence. This is a stance I’d expect from Fuck-You-All Chretien. Its not overly surprising when one thinks about it though. Martin’s Liberals were mostly against it as were the NDP and the Bloc. That more than 50% of the house so it would have never have passed if put to a vote.

The most amusing thing about this entire debate is not one person in Canada believes that Missile Defence will keep us safe or even work, not even the Conservatives who are the strongest supporters of it. The Conservatives say we should join Missile Defence to mend fences with the USA. They have a point that mending should be done, but I honestly believe any mending should involve both Canada and the US.

I mean the US isn’t going out of its way to make us want to mend fences. The Softwood lumber issue and the more recent BSE border closure have angered a lot of people (at least in the Western half of the country, which is ironically the Conservative strong hold of Canada). While I believe that Missile Defence is a bad idea, if the US simply made a gesture that they were willing to negotiate, like by fixing those two long standing trade disputes, I’d consider Missile Defence as an acceptable price (We are losing billions from these disputes yearly, missile defence is cheap in comparison). I mean, we’re already part of NORAD, which is simply watching for missiles, Missile Defence is a logical extension. Plus we just jumped military spending by like 13 Billion, so there should be some cash in there for Missile Defence. It could be better spent doing other things like securing our borders, buying cargo planes (so we don’t have to rent them from the Russians) and building up some military strength, but the only reason we are doing that is to make the US happy anyway so I think they’d understand if we devoted more money to their current pet project.

The thing is Canada saying no to Missile Defence isn’t going to stop it from being built, it is just like us saying no to Iraq didn’t stop that war from happening. The US will expand the NORAD radar systems and we will pay for that segment of the system, but we won’t pay for the defensive missiles.

I know what you’re thinking, what does this have to do with the original topic? Nothing. I was distracted by a bright shiny rant and I became lost in it. Sorry.

Warning, this comment may contain ideas which are not suitable for the sane or decent. you have been warned

but it was such a nice rant… and so true…
but I think Bush should get tared and feathered… not be let off with a nice simple suicide…

Plus he should have to marry his daughters off to canadians to ensure the [peace] like in the old days…

That’d be cool, watching them forced into loveless marriages, as they become alcoholics, and drink themselves to death before herr Bush leave office
