PearOS developers claim CherryOS is in violation of GPL
Posted by plurk in Uncategorized on March 31st, 2005
I phoned them at 6:15 MST 22MAR05, and when I asked to speak to someone regarding CherryOS, I was put in touch with a Mr John Miller. He refused to speak with me concerning CherryOS being a derivative of PearPC, and their incompliance with the GPL. I was told directly, and bluntly, that he would not speak to me, and that if I had these allegations, that I need speak with an Attorney. So, that’s exactly what I’m doing. …
Since I view Maui X-Stream as in breach of the GPL under which my code is distributed, let this serve as public notice, that my code is no longer legally available for any reason to Maui X-Stream. Since they refuse to co-operate with the very lenient guidelines of the GPL, and refuse at all ends to comply with it. They can no longer claim any rights under the GPL license concerning my code. As such, my original rights of copyright apply, and I refuse any legal access to Maui X-Stream to my code (my code being specifically the G4/AltiVec emulation in generic, and in specific to x86 scalar, and SSE as implemented as a modification to the PearPC project). Notice, if you’re paying attention, even if they comply with the GPL now, they’re still in violation of my copyright.
This entire situtation is similar to the XviD vs. Sigma Designs thing a couple years back, but now infinitely worse. Under the GPL, if you are inviolation of the GPL, all you rights under the GPL are permanently terminated. The copyright holder has the right to forgive the transgression, but the developers of PearOS are no longer in any mood to do so … so its going to court. There are a lot of articles on this already: starport, drunkenblog, drunkenblog, drunkenblog, HT Technology, eweek, and dhost.
Anyway, PearOS is suing them, but they need donations.
Christopher Who?

((Doctor Who)Christopher Eccleston).act();
javax.media.bbc.BadTypecastException: actor does not want to be typecast.
I’m not sure how many of you have seen the pilot episode of the new Doctor Who series (it was decent, I would go as far as saying good, but I think I’m biased by the fact that it was the first doctor who episode I’d seen in a long while … I completely missed the last doctor … well almost) . While filming has already ended for the season, it appears that Christopher Eccleston (those who don’t know his name, he played Major West in 28 days later … if that helps) has decided to quit because he doesn’t want to get typecast. So it’s time for doctor #10 for next season … if there is a next season.
Apple joins the Blu-Ray Consortium
Posted by Jin597 in Uncategorized on March 26th, 2005
Apple (March 10th) was announced to be joining the Blu-Ray Consortium. This probably means that Apple has plans to release a Blu-Ray drive sometime in the next couple of years. For those of you without macs, or haven’t tapped into their macs much, software such as iMovieHD and all their other HD software come with the ability to encode using the H.264 codec. So what does that mean?… large format High Def movies that no one can burn… currently. With Blu-Ray, this will be possible… not to mention will save me tons of discs when doing backups
They are quoting Blu-Ray to go as high as 50GB per disc (Dual Layer) and 25GB single layer…. either way, good! more here
“Apple is pleased to join the Blu-ray Disc Association board as part of our efforts to drive consumer adoption of HD,†said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Consumers are already creating stunning HD content with Apple’s leading video editing applications like iMovie HD and are anxiously awaiting a way to burn their own high def DVDs.â€
P2PUnite!
Posted by plurk in Uncategorized on March 26th, 2005
Hi all. Just ran across P2PUnite. It is a site spouting rhetoric similar to the Hacker’s Manifesto, but this time about file sharing. In any case, they want to prove to the music and movie industry that the people downloading their product also purchase their stuff. To demonstrate this, they are calling for a boycott of all products by these companies (Movies, CD, DVD, etc) for “[t]he last week in April 2005 - 24th up until and including 30th.” Sounds like fun. Hell, they even got some flyers that people can put up.
Go!

The oldest game in the world still played in its original form is Go (aka Igo, Weiqi, and Baduk). Go boasts the slogan of “A few moments to learn, a lifetime to master.” This claim stems from the fact that rules of the game are extremely simple, but after you play for a while you realize the game has an almost endless number of strategies you can use to win. A wiki website about Go can be found here.
Natural Nuclear Reactors?!

Hmm. I had no idea that there were once natural nuclear reactors over in Africa (well, a couple billion years ago, but still). Am I the only one who didn’t know this, or is this new knowledge to the rest of you too? It seems to cool not to have heard of it before :-).

Tonight at 19:58:31 local time (01:58:31 GMT), it will have been 1111111111 seconds since the UNIX epoch. (Background: UNIX keeps track of time as the number of seconds since January 1st, 1970. You can see the current time with the “date +%s” command.)
