New Movies… at least to me
Posted by Jin597 in Uncategorized on May 29th, 2004
I was on apple again today (when aren’t I there?).
Catwoman
I am not sure if this is supposed to be a version of Batman’s Catwoman or just a movie and similar type character. Either way, Halle Berry looks awesome as usual…. and seems run of the mill super hero type movie.

Harold and Kumar Go To WhiteCastle
Yes…. White Castle. I have no real desire to see this, until I saw that Neil Patrick Harris (aka Doogie Howser) wants strippers and lapdances. Well… needless to say that is a MUST SEE on its own. *SARCASM* I will watch it… but no way I would pay money to see it. I will wait until my sister buys the DVD as I am sure she will.

Fotografie Verboten!
Posted by plurk in Uncategorized on May 28th, 2004
“You can’t take photos in here” says the random university official, “All photographers must be approved by the University’s PR Department.” This being my third time wandering into the University library to take pictures and this being the first I’ve ever heard of this, so I reply “You’re kidding me right?” To my surprise he replies “No, I’m not. It is university bylaw (something that I don’t recall now).” Then he has the nerve to add “Give me your camera, the pictures you’ve taken I can’t let you keep.” I reply “Like hell I’m handing you my camera. I’ve only taken one picture of the Library circulation desk, see, it’s deleted.” That seems to make him happy and he wanders off to torment anothers with camera.
The University is a publicly funded facility. I fail to see how they can possibly demand that I cease taking pictures let alone demand my property. What if I didn’t have a digital camera, what was he going to do, tear out my film? What if I, like in this instance, had other pictures in there like Musotensei’s departure from the city? Last time I checked, there was no large sign says “Fotografie Verboten! Übertreter wird totgeschossen.” posted at all entrances to the University. How dare he demand my camera? Are they rights not protected like open public spaces like Wascana Park, where I can take pictures without some turkey demanding my camera (unless he has a weapon of some sort and is demanding other things like wallet, watch, etc). Why can’t I take pictures of a publicly funded facilty and where can I find this bylaw?
As you can tell, I’m a little annoyed so off to the PR department I go. No one is there but one lone secretary who was unfamiliar with any such bylaw but thinks it applies only to pictures of people (staff, students, visitors) if their face is clearly visible in the picture. Fine. Go back to the Library and take pictures of everything I wanted to without getting a single person in the shot.
I fail to see the problem here … are students covertly going to the University and fear that some lone amateur photographer is going to reveal their secret? Or are they afraid I might capture the working spirit of the Employees and they suddenly have to explain to the government and the people of the Saskatchewan why they are wasting so much money?
Aren’t photographs like words, protected under the freedoms of speech or is there a real basis for this bylaw in Canadian law? I vaguely recall something about no being able to sell pictures/video of people without their permission … does this apply to any type of publishing like say internet photo galleries are? Anyone lurking and/or participating know?

Just found something amusing that was supposedly on display at the London Institute of Contemporary Arts during August 2002. Suicide Bomber Barbie.

Here is something to liven your otherwise boring day:
… Veteran schoolteacher Carrie Peoples, 63, quit her job in April in Covington, Ga., after an incident in which she responded to a trash-talking 14-year-old student by ordering two male classmates to toss the girl out of an open window … [More]
There are other interesting stories there too, feel free to check it out. (This article is about halfway down the page under the “Can’t Possibly Be True” section.)

The story on Slashdot about Blimps… In… Space… brought out a reference to something I’d never heard of before: The Deltoid Pumpkin Seed. A brief synopsis goes like this: “Zealots (both religious and technological) try to revive airships for use in inexpensive air transport, fail badly a couple of times, succeed technically on last dime, go broke. No one pays attention afterward.” This got me thinking. Reviving technology like that from the Aereon might be a good idea. One doesn’t need to put a perfectly clean ion engine one it like the JP Aerospace one (it would, assuming a linear acceleration, get take a craft 133km in the first hours, an additional 266 km in the next hour or ~400 km in two hours), but a propeller system would work just about as efficiently. Use much less fuel, especially if you designed some sort of hydrogen engine for the aircraft itself. Airships have a sort of elegance that modern aircraft do not have. Slower true, but if they were designed to take that into account, they could very enjoyable.
Goodbye New Shows

Last year was bad for new shows, but according to TV Tome’s roundup 2003/04, this year was even worse. Look at all those red cancelled bits … Talking about cancelled, not cancelled … after watching this seasons finale of Andromeda, I was certain it was cancelled … It appears I was mistaken. They apparently filmed two endings to this season … but they got renewed and the series didn’t end. Considering the abysmal storylines of the fourth season, this might not be a good thing … I’d comment on the end of this season of Andromeda and it’s general mistaken direction, but others have done a much better job.
